What do we do?
The primary role of the purpose group for evangelism is to take the “Good News†of Jesus Christ into the world, and in particular to the people of Chatham. “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations…†(Matthew 28:19)
These words may have been spoken to Jesus’ disciples 2,000 years ago, but they are equally as pertinent to us today.
This is done in the traditional Salvation Army way, “on the streetsâ€, and also in providing evangelical support for the various sections within our church i.e. the Band, the Songsters, the Youth Sections, and more recently the new Coffee Shop.
The Gospel is brought into all events within and outside the Hall, and we are exploring a number of new initiatives to reach out into the community. The people of Chatham need Jesus, and it is our calling as followers of Christ to tell them. We need to take Jesus to the people. “I will give you every place where you set your feet, as I promised Moses.†(Joshua 1:3)
How do we fit into the body of the Corps?
Evangelism is one of the five purpose groups within the Corps, the others being: Discipleship, Fellowship, Service and Worship. The group meets on average about once every six weeks, and is made up of members of the Corps of all ages and experience. A lead is provided in evangelical activities, and support is given for all other activities within the Corps. All sections of the Corps are represented within the group which is lively and energetic, having fun doing God’s work.
As stated in our Corps values (see Vision and Values) the aim is to explore all avenues of evangelism to “bring Christ to people and people to Christâ€, and to set people free to explore whatever God is seeking to do in their lives. Each member is valued and their input, no matter how small, is cherished. “The body is a unit, though it is made of many parts; and though all it’s parts are many, they form one body. So it is with Christ.†(1 Corinthians 12:12)
We all have different gifts. We all have a part to play. Let’s do it together for Christ!
Paul Scoulding is the leader of this group having taken over from his brother Steve early in 2010
