Chatham Citadel Corps

Sunday 28th July 2019

Our 10am meeting was titled  ‘Light and Life to all He Brings’

led by Major Ian Payne

Following some introductory music from the Band , (Led by Adrian Horwood  this morning )- Moving in the Light of God , Turn your eyes upon Jesus & We want to see Jesus Lifted high, the announcements were delivered by Paul Scoulding who was the acting CSM today , reminding us that we have no evening meetings throughout August, and no Kaos until September..

Major Ian began the meeting by drawing our thoughts to those of our Corps who are away at TMS & Summer School.

The message this morning , ‘Light and Life to all He Brings’ was apparently a line that was stuck in Major Ian’s head, and when he looked it up he realised it came from ” Hark The Herald Angel Sing”. Not something usually sung in July.

Our 1st song of the morning was

Song:         401                      We want to see Jesus Lift High

Tune           916                      “                  “                  “

followed by

Song          389                      Rejoice Rejoice

Tune          807                      “        “

reflecting on the words from the song – Rejoice! Rejoice!
Christ is in you
The hope of glory
In our hearts
He lives! He lives!
His breath is in you
Arise a mighty army
We arise

Major Ian read from Ezekiel 37:4 – 5  “I will Make breath enter you.

our 3rd song of the morning was

Song           397                      This is my desire

Tune           676                      I give you my heart  (Piano)

Reading                                 John 1:3-5

We Sang the next  Chorus through a couple of times

Song          369                      I Love you Lord

Tune          679                      “                  “

which set the tone for a time of Prayer that followed , with prayers coming from the congregation.

The Singing Company gave us the Song ” Change & Grow”, which they sang superbly

The congregation then Sang  Song  108    Hark the Herald   to the tune   of     Maidstone. This was a first for many of us I think .

Following the Collection & Bible reading    John 1:1- 14  we heard from the Songsters – who Sang ” when we cannot see our Way ” Led this morning by Adrian Horwood- (photo courtesy of Major Estelle)

The Message                                ‘Light and life to all he brings’

Major Ian referred to the words in Hark The Herald , sung earlier ” light & life”  and to Genesis 1:1-5  , making the point that it is not just differences between Night & Day , but Good & Evil , like the difference between  being alone in the dark or having a torch with you.

We were challenged this Summer to speak to people about light & life.

we concluded our meeting by singing

Song           792                      Thank you for these quiet minutes

Tune           369                      Here is love                            (Piano)

followed by

Song           1007                    Let there be love

Tune           730                      “                  “

which we sang as a Benediction

5pm No Meeting

 John 1 The Message

1-2 The Word was first, the Word present to God, God present to the Word. The Word was God,   in readiness for God from day one. 3-5 Everything was created through him;  nothing—not one thing!— came into being without him. What came into existence was Life,  and the Life was Light to live by. The Life-Light blazed out of the darkness;  the darkness couldn’t put it out.

6-8 There once was a man, his name John, sent by God to point out the way to the Life-Light. He came to show everyone where to look, who to believe in. John was not himself the Light; he was there to show the way to the Light. 9-13 The Life-Light was the real thing:   Every person entering Life he brings into Light.

He was in the world, the world was there through him,  and yet the world didn’t even notice. He came to his own people,  but they didn’t want him. But whoever did want him,  who believed he was who he claimed and would do what he said, He made to be their true selves,   their child-of-God selves.
These are the God-begotten,  not blood-begotten,    not flesh-begotten, not sex-begotten.

14 The Word became flesh and blood,    and moved into the neighborhood. We saw the glory with our own eyes,  the one-of-a-kind glory,   like Father, like Son.   Generous inside and out, true from start to finish.

This Wednesday 31st July  we have the Oasis fellowship & this coming Saturday 3rd August we have the next in our series of Regular Coffee and Bacon Butty mornings
