Our meeting this Sunday was led by Major Ian Payne
The theme of the morning was
‘Who do you think you are?’
Major Ian began with a Bible Reading: Jeremiah 29 v 11
11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future”
Major Ian explained that if God has plans for us , then it follows that he knows us.
The Major shared some of his Summer adventures, which included tracing some family history in Jersey during his holiday over there
The congregation then sang our first song of the meeting , from General John Gowans
Song 329 Who is it tells me what to do
Tune 854 (BAND)
SASB 328 To Be like Jesus
Tune 898 “ “ (PIANO)
Prayer time followed and those of the Corp mentioned on our Prayer list were prayed for.
The Singing Company gave us their contribution to the meeting ” Our Father”
A Bible reading followed Matthew 22:34-40
34 Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees got together. 35 One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question: 36 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”
37 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’[c] 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[d] 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”
The congregation was then invited to sing the first verse of the following song
SOF 1498 Over all the earth you reign on high (Piano) ***
after which we began with a Summer Round up of what people in the Corps had been involved in
Music school was attended by Fiona Pennington where she enjoyed playing in the Band
TMS was attended by Martin Davis , who played and sang in everything, but said the Bible teaching was the best bit
Kids camp was attended by Elsa Burdett, where she was the leader of a group of 6 girls , and she enjoyed the Visit to Go ape at Bedgebury
Senior camp ( William Booth Summer School), was attended by Olive Long , who told us that she enjoyed the fellowship & learning about Salvation Army History
The Songsters, gave us the Song ” Come to me”
Message from the Word Who do you think you are?
Major Ian began his message by giving us the names of 3 previous officers of the Corps ( Cooper , Buckle & Ashton ), names that were not familiar to us , but we know they all must have made a difference in the life of the Corps, we just don’t know the details . We reflected on what will be said of Chatham Corps in another 145 years, and what difference will our generation have made.
We were asked what distinctive characteristics we may have, do we have patience , do we love God ..and everyone in the Corps is different, but we do all have a common thread that bind us .that thread is a love of Jesus of Nazareth..and that is something that helps to make us who we are as Christians, the act of attending church does not do it .That Characteristic needs to be within us , and it defines us
We were reminded that People come to Faith because of who YOU are .
The meeting drew to a close with the singing of our two final songs
Song 323 Move Holy Spirit
Tune 762 “ “ “ “ “ (PIANO)
Song 96 There’s other name but this name
Tune 772 “ “
Thank you to all those who helped make worship possible today .
