Faith through action
This is the story of how Trevor Grant came to faith, told in his own words.
Christine and I have been married for 38 years and have always lived in and around Gravesend. We have two grown up sons James 30, & Matthew 28. Both have now flown the nest, both live locally, and between them we have been blessed with five granddaughters between the ages of 13, and 3 months.
I am employed by G4S based in Sutton, Surrey (formerly Securicor) where I have worked in sales and marketing roles for over 38 years and am responsible for some of our major High Street retail customers.
In August 1990 I was given the opportunity to join a humanitarian aid convoy travelling by road to provide much needed medical supplies to the Romanian orphanages that had been brought to the attention of the world via the media following the uprising which saw the execution of the communist President Nicolai Ceausescu and his wife.
Although I didn’t realise it at the time, this aid trip was to be the beginning of another journey – my Christian walk with the Lord!
The aid mission to the orphanages was operated by a group of Christian teachers from Biggin Hill in Kent. This trip was to be, for me, a life changing experience which took me completely outside of my comfort zone, and what I had considered would be a short adventure turned out to be the most harrowing and life changing experience for me, seeing first hand the dark, dank, filthy, and heartbreaking conditions where children were securely kept and forgotten in these terrible conditions away from the public view. Many of these children were suffering from aids and/or other ailments! The aid mission transported clothing, medicines, blankets, food, toys, and much more, all urgently required aid and all donated by people from the UK.
Each morning before we started our distribution work, we would gather together and hold a prayer meeting in the orphanage where we were based. This short time in prayer was a new experience for me, but I felt strangely aware of an inner voice comforting me and providing the strength to continue with our work where each and every simple task was a challenge!
Throughout the 1990s I returned to Romania each year supporting the ongoing work of the group which had by now received charity status and was known as “Bless the Children”. It was during 1993 that I first realised the Lord had been at work in my life over the past few years, and I felt the need to find a spiritual home. I attended a few local churches nearby, but I didn’t feel particularly at home in these. However in September 1995, I was invited to the Salvation Army Harvest Festival at Gravesend Corps where my two nieces at the time were members of the Girls Brigade. I knew immediately that I had at last found my spiritual home.
Praise God
Trevor became a member of the Chatham Corps last year.
