Gospel Choirs Together

Our own Community Gospel Choir joined with the Gospel Choir from Hythe to participate in the recent Divisional Fiesta Day themed ‘Together’.

The event was held at the Hawthorns School, Bletchingley, under the guiding hands of Divisional Leaders, Lt. Cols. Anthony and Gillian Cotterill. ‘Together in Celebration’ occupied the morning and included special activities for children, tweenagers and others. ‘Together for Food’ needs no explanation and prepared those present for an afternoon of activity described as ‘Together as Family’. Kids Choir, Baby Song, Crafts, Face Painting, Field Games and a Football Tournament preceded the Giant Twister Challenge (the mind boggles!). ‘All Together’ was the final act of the day when the Divisional Family did just that, come together for worship.

Ray Maycock was present and here are his thoughts on the day and the Gospel Choir in particular:

The UK Salvation Army in South London, Kent and part of Sussex has nearly 60 centres of different types, and over 500 people drawn from those various places came together for a very enjoyable, informal ‘Fiesta’ on Sunday 18th July. The day (blessed by glorious weather) was held at Bletchingley, using the facilities and lovely spacious surroundings of Hawthorns School.

The theme throughout the day was “Together – Living and Building the Kingdom.”  The programme was designed simply to give everyone the opportunity to relax and be together and to share (if you wished!) in a bewildering array of activities on offer for all ages – sports, games, band mini-concerts, choir performances, informal meetings, picnics, chatting with friends and acquaintances – whatever it might be!

Our own Community Gospel Choir, augmented by members the Hythe SA Gospel Choir, was featured twice during the afternoon and provided several contrasted items. Although the audience seating was placed some distance away (this was intentional, the area being required for special use later) and given the challenge of singing in the open air, the Choir did really well – I particularly admired their obvious enthusiasm (often lacking in some vocal combinations!).

In the concluding time of worship, the Choir were again used, providing well chosen songs. It was a moving scene of special blessing to see so many people in the crowd forming impromptu groups, using the theme of “Together – Living and Building the Kingdom of God” in their prayers.

Special appreciation should be recorded for the leadership of Wes Carroll (of Hythe SA – an inspiring conductor), for the very able ‘backing’ of Emma Davis and David Lockwood (keyboard and percussion respectively, both of Chatham SA) and for the efficient and considerable organisational work of Sam Wood (also of Chatham SA). Good team!

From a ‘fiesta’ I now need a ‘siesta!’
