Calvary Revisited
As we entered Good Friday we reflected on the meal many of us shared on Thursday evening in preparation for Easter weekend.
At table our conversation was directed towards the Last Supper eaten by Jesus and his disciples. Questions such as ‘What was Jesus doing when he washed the disciples’ feet’, ‘How does it make you feel when others serve you?’ and ‘Can Jesus even forgive those who betray him?’ were posed for discussion and the evening concluded with General Albert Orsborn’s song ‘My life must be Christ’s broken bread‘.
Our morning meeting was led by Major Beverley McCombe and included songs 126, 133 and 293 from the Salvation Army Song Book together with 168 from Songs of Fellowship. The Worship Band also featured and the Singing Company contributed ‘How can I be free from sin? (Lead me to the cross)’. Sarah Lockwood was the soloist with ‘There is a Green Hill’ and Matt Smith with the Worship Band.
Several readings from scripture were used including Matthew 26:14-16, 20-25, 47-50, 57-68 and 69-75 together with two passages from Matthew 27:11-26 and 27-31. The meeting was themed around the concept ‘Outside the City Wall’ featuring a barrier between the congregation and the cross and how that barrier can be broken down.
Following the meeting the Band and other members of the corps joined with local churches for witness in the town centre. Stopping en route at three locations in the High Street for a song, reading and prayer, around 200 local Christians held a 20 minute service near to MacDonald’s led by Major Drew McCombe. The whole event was organised by Rev’d Brian Adams of the Emmaus Church Centre.
