Greetings from Far North

The Far North Corps, situated in Kaitaia, New Zealand, sends greetings to Chatham

Whilst travelling in New Zealand Verna and Murray Smith stopped at a pie shop in Kaitaia and discovered it was right next door to the Far North corps premises which housed not only the worship hall but also the community shop. On discovering that all four travellers (Jim & Marion Black were with them) were ‘Sallies’ the retired Corps Sergeant Major showed them over the building and showed great interest in Chatham and its Salvation Army heritage. It also seems she has a sister-in-law who lives in Mayweed Road on the Weeds Wood estate.

The Far North corps is the most northerly in New Zealand and is over 150 kilometres from its nearest neighbours at Whangarei and so feels very isolated. A normal Sunday congregation numbers about 30 people and lack of finance limits the corps’ work amongst the local people.

The picture below includes two retired CSMs,  Murray (on the left) being the retired CSM of Chatham Corps.

  1. I think it’s only when you are away from home that you truly appreciate what it really means to you – great to see Murray and Verna are enjoying themselves in their home away from home. Keep the home fires burning brightly – God Bless from all Ambassadors of Holiness Session @ WBC
