COMMUNITY GOSPEL CHOIR PREPARES FOR FIRST PERFORMANCE
Chatham’s newly formed Community Gospel Choir, managed by The Salvation Army and supported by Kent Messenger, is working hard in preparation for its first performance at the town’s Central Theatre on 28 November. The choir will take centre stage in both the 3pm and 7pm performances of ‘Nativity – the Word on the Street’, this year’s Christmas Carol Concert arranged by The Salvation Army.
With over 70 participants, mostly comprising local volunteer members of the public, the rehearsals are proving to be very exciting times under the leadership of Wesley Carroll, Director of Performing Arts at the Towers School and Sixth Form Centre in Ashford, Kent.
Much enthusiasm is being generated by the prospect of singing in front of a packed theatre, it seats over 900 people, twice over and the choir is determined to show the Medway Towns what it is capable of.
Press Officer for The Salvation Army in Chatham, Murray Smith, says ‘whilst this venture has not been influenced by BBC Television it is interesting to compare progress with that of ‘The Choir’ recently seen on BBC2 and to realize the potential of community activities of this nature. We hope that many people will want to come and enjoy what the choir and other participants can offer. Tickets can be obtained from the Central Theatre at either the Box Office (01634 338338) or on line (www.medway.gov.uk/theatrebookings)
The concerts will also feature an opportunity to donate new gifts and toys to be distributed to children and adults in the Medway Towns over the Christmas period. Last year The Salvation Army was able to help over 190 families, including more than 450 children, and hopes to do even better this year.
