Silver from Peru
The Ladies Fellowship met on Monday in the lounge at Pembroke Court, a change of venue from the Salvation Army Hall due to the building works which are being carried out there. Major Beverley McCombe introduced the evening which comprised the showing of a dvd explaining the living conditions of people living in the countryside around Lima.
The lack of land for building means that small homes are cramped on the bare hillsides and look precarious as they balance on wooden stilts. Water has to be bought from the water container lorry and the washing arrangements are very basic. Families have very little money even though many of the husbands/fathers go away to work to support their families, sometimes only returning for three or four days every three months.
A social enterprise company, Achkiy, has been formed by two women from the UK who are teaching and helping the women make silver jewellery and greetings cards from scratch. A selection of jewellery recently imported from Peru was available for the ladies to buy.
Some encouraging thoughts on how we can cope by trusting in God when things go wrong were brought by Patti.
Next month, October 11, the meeting will be held at Pembroke Court again and the speaker will be a representative from St. Fagins charity which excels in telling stories to children and family counselling. In November it will be the time to cover and pack shoeboxes for the Christmas Appeal. This year the Ladies Fellowship will be providing gifts for ladies and would welcome contributions – including the empty shoeboxes.
