African Arts on a Summer’s Evening

Members of the Ladies Fellowship met this month at the Garden World Garden Centre in Rainham where the area of special interest is the African Arts Centre.

The Centre has been set up in order to benefit the people of Ghana by giving them regular paid employment.   The owners have direct links with family in Accra who have put into effect the plan to build a pottery where locally sourced clay can be used to make garden pots which are sold here in England.   In addition to this, carvers are employed to carve African figures out of wood, mainly teak and sometimes mahogany, and finishers are employed to finish them to a high standard.

The ladies met in the Coffee Shop at the Garden Centre where they were able to hear all about the growth of this project and see some photographs. After the time spent touring the Centre, and then partaking of coffee and cakes, Audrey Holder brought the evening to a close with a short epilogue.

Such a difficult choice!

There will be no meeting during August but on September 14 the next meeting will be addressed by an invited guest – to be announced.
