In Good Company
A very apt title for the first number of the Band’s visit to Coventry City corps last weekend under the leadership of Bandmaster Carl Woodman.
The Band was welcomed to Coventry by COs Captains Michael and Lisa Lloyd-Jones who are coming towards the end of their appointment to the corps and will soon move to continue Salvation Army service in Manchester.

In its Saturday evening concert the Band continued with ‘We saw Love’, ‘Paean’, ‘Easter Glory’ and ‘Wyndfield’. Songster Leader Adrian Horwood contributed the euphonium solo ‘Canaan’s Land’.
Following a short interval when members of the band were able to mingle with the audience the Band continued in ‘Big Band’ style with ‘Swingtime Religion’, ‘Glory Be!’ (featuring the trombones), ‘Deep River’, ‘Tomado de la Mano’, All to Jesus’ and ‘Greater Things’.
Coventry City Songsters added much to the evening with ‘If you would be Strong’ and ‘Soon and very soon’ and Richard Craik brought a Bible reading and comment.

The Sunday morning meeting was led by Rosemary Steadman-Allen and included ‘Move, Holy Spirit’ and ‘Consecration Hymn’ by the Band and a vocal solo form Rachel Horwood. Rosemary included songs 506, 400 and 59 from the Salvation Army Song Book. Greg Davis gave the address based on John 10:7-10. Greg commented ‘given the financial crisis, swine flu, unemployment, repossessions, MP’s expense accounts and countless other disasters recently one might be tempted to reconsider Jesus’ words in the above passage’.
The Band joined with Coventry salvationists for an open-air witness in the City Centre at lunchtime.
The second meeting of the day was led by Carl Woodman and included a selection of music by the Band. Numbers chosen were ‘Saints of God’, ‘Songs of Victory’, ‘There is a Redeemer’ (trombones again), ‘My all is on the Altar’ and ‘St Teresa’. The visit concluded with the march ‘Silver Star’. Coventry City Songsters again made a contribution and Adrian Horwood brought a Bible reading and comment.
Coventry City Band visited Chatham for a similar weekend last year and the members of the Chatham Band felt it was good to renew friendship with their Coventry counterparts.
In conclusion, remember the final words of John 10:10 where it says that Jesus came that they might have life and have it to the full. In bringing it’s message to Coventry the Band undertook much prayerful preparation, as well as musical of course. We leave you with two pictures reminding us that all we do for God must be surrounded in prayer so that, as the trombones pointed out – Glory be! – always to God.
For out of His infinite riches in Jesus
He giveth and giveth and giveth again
(the words of Annie Johnson Flint with which the Band started the weekend in the privacy of the bandroom and which form the backbone of our faith!)
