Calling all writers
Ray Knapman, one of Chatham’s soldiers, recently took part in a Christian Writers’ course held at the Army’s William Booth College in London. He shares what he experienced on the course and encourages other writers to contact him with their material
Scripts, rap, articles and interviews were some of the topics covered on the recent Christian Writers’ course at William Booth College in London. Lyrics and books were also touched upon during the week-long course.
Delegates were blessed with a range of tutors with a wealth of experience – General John Larsson, Majors Joy Webb, Charles King, Nigel Bovey and Christine Clement, Dr John Coutts, lyricists Stephen Pearson and Andrew Blyth all contributed, along with Jonathan Aitkin and Norman and Pat Kember. Representatives from the UK Salvation Army’s Editorial Department visited and informed delegates on submitting work for publication – how to do it and in what format.
Over the course of a week, a lot of ground was covered, and it was often around 8.30 at night before we finished our day. At the end of that long but rewarding day I was ready to crawl to my bed, shattered!
I have learnt a lot and am now looking forward to putting it all into practice. In the meantime, I am looking to collect any articles or reports which readers wish to have printed in Chatham’s corps magazine.

Hi Ray,
I’m glad you’re following up on the course. It was good, wasn’t it? I’ve got some more ideas lined up for The War Cry and Salvationist which I hope they’ll print.
