A year for discipleship

ALOVE – The Salvation Army’s youth movement – has designated 2009 as a year for discipleship; that is learning to follow Jesus and live like him.

At the start of this year ALOVE also relaunched its website, taking on an easier-to-access, friendlier format and launched a new range of resources, starting with this month’s Discipleship cell notes.

Well worth checking out at www.salvationarmy.org.uk/alove

It’s not only ALOVE that is promoting discipleship. In a recent article in Salvationist (10 January 2009) UK leader Commissioner John Matear emphasised the Kingdom mission priority of The Salvation Army. He emphasised that Salvationists must prioritise making disciples – that is, growing saints.

Following on from Jesus’ command to his disciples to ‘go and make disciples of all nations’, Commissioner Matear is encouraging Salvationists to do likewise by helping equip others to understand God’s word and live it out personally, in the corps and the world; to enable them to share the love of God through their words and actions; and encourage people of all ages to follow Jesus.

Check out next week’s Salvationist (7 February) for his follow-up article about what discipleship means for you – his reminder that Jesus’ disciples weren’t perfect, just as we aren’t, is a welcome reminder and an encouragement.

Meanwhile, to find out more about telling others about Jesus, the Contagious Christianity course starts on Sunday (1 February) at 3.30pm at Chatham Salvation Army hall!
