Brownies/Guides 50th year

For many years the Baden Powell sections have been an important part of our Corps.   This year is the 50th year of the inauguration of the Brownies and Guides and it would be very interesting for the present leaders and members to hear from people who have memories of their own, or family members’, involvement in these groups.

Let the Brownies and Guides hear from you through this website by using the ‘Comments’ box below.

  1. My mother Mrs Rosina Wood (also mother to Jean Jones and Pat Phillips) was Life Saving Guard Leader (the Salvation Army version of the Girl Guides) then Guide Captain and also District Commissioner for Chatham South Guide Division.
My wife Catherine Wood came up through the Guards/Guides and was Lieutenant, then Guide Captain (Cappy) until we had seven children and decided family and guiding was too much. Her mother Mrs.Edith Biles was Brownie Guider, at one time we had three Brownie Packs. then she took over as Chaplain.
Tracy (KAOS Leader) was born just after and then Sam (Fellowship Group Leader) a bit after that.
I re-started the Scout Troop, with Gordon Phillips and Trevor Hudson, was Scoutmaster then Group Scoutmaster, also until 1968 when Mike Woodhouse took over (having worked together for some years). Guiding is still a great movement, helping to make good citizens of the future.

  2. My mother, Mrs Rosina Wood, was very proud to be the first Salvation Army Girl Guide Commissioner. She had been for many years the leader of the Life Saving Guards, the Salvation Army’s own movement which was very similar to the Guides.
