Light of the world
Light or darkness?
On… off… on… off…
I can flick the switch and get what I want –
light or darkness.
Light for seeing and working and playing.
Darkness for sleeping or hiding or escaping.
But I can’t flick
the light of the created world
on and off.
Thank God for the light of the sun
that gives life to the world.
Thank God for the darkness of night
in which to rest.
Thank God for the miracle of creation
weaving together all that is necessary for
food and warmth
life and growth.
Without light none of it could happen.
On… off… on… off…
Sometimes it feels as if
the light in my soul
flickers on and off too.
I wish it didn’t.
Lord Jesus, hold me close to you
the source of light.
On… on… on… on…
You are the one who
shines in the darkness
and never turns off.
No darkness extinguishes you!
Draw me to your light
like a moth to a flame
until we shine as one
In the darkness of the world.
