Alaskan Adventures

At the Ladies Fellowship meeting this week Mike Collins gave an illustrated talk on the visit he and his wife made to Alaska.

Mike Collins talks to website correspondent Jean Jones

They visited during the summer months when there are 24 hrs of daylight and the snow is mainly on the mountain-tops. After explaining some of the geography of this country, he showed photographs of the trips around the lakes and glaciers which were surrounded by mountains, topped with snow.

The ladies at the meeting were surprised to see the wonderful floral displays at the entrances to hotels, restaurants they visited. These included large hanging baskets and pots of geraniums, dahlias and other flowers which are familiar in this country.

Alaska is the land of the reindeer (caribou) and their antlers were much in evidence as decoration on the outside of the houses.

After the organised tours were completed, Mike told of their adventure travelling north alongside the oil pipeline up to the Arctic coastline.   Although they had hoped to see the aurora borealis they were unfortunate as smoke from the forest fires obliterated it from their view.

Jean Jones gave a short epilogue which drew attention to the saving grace of Jesus turning our sins of scarlet into white as snow.
