Father, Son and Holy Spirit

Corps Sergeant Major Paul Scoulding welcomed the Songsters to Plumstead as part of a local initiative to attract people to the corps.

Paul, with his wife Wendy, became Christians at Chatham within the last two years as a result of family influence and the Alpha Course. Subsequently the couple felt led to transfer to Plumstead where the need for leaders was great and Paul has since taken on the role of CSM in support to Captain Eileen Halliday.

Chatham Songsters visited Plumstead last Saturday (26 April) to present a programme of music and ministry and the evening was planned under the theme ‘Father, Son and Holy Spirit’. Whilst continuously flowing the programme divided itself naturally into these three expressions, beginning with ‘Our God’, ‘Under His Wings’ and ‘God & God Alone’, finishing this section with ‘Praise His Holy Name’.

The Brigade continued with three songs about Jesus focussing on Easter in particular. ‘Wondrous Cross’, ‘We saw Love’ and ‘Jesus will still be there’ were the songs included and these were augmented by a quintet singing ‘Come to the Cross’.

Featuring the Holy Spirit the brigade sang ‘I will call upon the Lord’, ‘Dry Bones’, ‘Breathe’ and ‘Sing a Jubilant Song’ to conclude an evening with a message.

Adding variety, the Brass Group brought ‘A Shining Light’ and ‘He found Me’ and Major Kathy Woodhouse gave a monologue (apologies to Joyce Grenfell). For many the highlight of the evening was again the testimony of John Mills. Positioned as it was following the song ‘Jesus will still be there’, John spoke of the 35 years of his life spent away from the Lord being involved with drink, drugs and violence and how he discovered that Jesus was still there for him personally after all that time. (Readers may click here to listen to John’s testimony given when he was enrolled as a soldier of The Salvation Army on 19 November 2006.)

We look forward to regular updates on the growth of the corps at Plumstead.
