Old Orchard Beach

An historic moment was recently recorded at Old Orchard Beach, on the coast of Maine, USA.

Five Generals of The Salvation Army, all now retired, who have led the organisation over the last three decades met together at the 122nd Old Orchard Beach Camp Meeting in July of this year. The photo shows (L to R) General Eva Burrows (1986-1993), General and Mrs Bramwell Tillsley (1993-1994), General Paul and Commissioner Kay Rader (1994-1999), General John and Commissioner Gisele Gowans (1999-2002) and General John and Commissioner Freda Larsson (2002-2006) being saluted for their role in guiding the Army through that period of time.

Each General was asked what was the greatest danger to the Salvation Army today. General John Gowans, a member of our Corps here at Chatham, said ‘being an invisible Army’ and mentioned that some young people resist wearing uniform today.

Referring to the presence of the five Generals, Commissioner Lawrence R Moretz, Territorial Commander, said ‘It has never happened before, and perhaps it never will again’.
