Monday Spot (22 October 2007)
We have already reported on the wedding which took place on Saturday. What a great day it was and a very tiring one for many people. The happy couple are now on their honeymoon and we are not giving away any secrets!
The atmosphere of celebration continued on Sunday despite the absence of a number of people following the rigours of Saturday. But in their place were many visitors who had come to support on the occasion of the dedication (christening) of Samuel Boughton. Proud parents, grandparents, sisters, other family members and friends all joined together as Captain Iain Hudson (Uncle Iain) conducted the ceremony with the help of his wife Alison.
The final picture of the group shows Samuel’s sisters and cousins singing together a song with words specially written for the occasion.
During the meeting, which was led by Major Drew, scripture references were made to Romans 12:1-2 and Mark 14:1-11 which formed the basis of the message. These were supported by songs 16 and 156 from The Salvation Army Song Book together with 851, 1113 and 595 from Songs of Fellowship. The Singing Company contributed ‘Gentle Jesus’ and the Songsters ‘In His Presence’. Major Drew, in his address, asked the question What is the purpose of worship? He referred to the corps vision of the river which can be read by clicking here. He said our worship will be deep, not only what we do on Sundays but everyday. Worship is the starting point of our life as part of God’s church. But it is not for our benefit, it is for us to worship God. It must be all or nothing, the whole jar. How is your worship? It is costly to worship, very costly, but our love must make it possible to pay (greater love hath no man that he laid down his life for his friend). So, church – how is your worship?
The evening meeting was led by Major Beverley who continued the theme of ‘Reactions to Jesus’, looking particularly at the injunction ‘we want you to’. Scripture from John 6:68-69, John 1:49 and John 20:28 was used and songs 627, 1404, and 935 from Songs of Fellowship with songs 645, 357, 479 and 489 from The Salvation Army Song Book completing the congregational participation. The Songsters contributed ‘Healing Christ’ and the Band ‘Breath of God’. Using Mark 10:35-45 as the basis for her message Major Beverley said James and John were no different from us. They did not understand the reality of God. They did not recognize the God they thought they knew in what had happened and He did not reach their expectations. Too many of us make this mistake and we must have a single minded devotion to Him. Martha is distracted by service but the way of God is for us to be with Him. Frenzied religeous activity is not necessary. We must be devoted and dedicated.
A truly special week-end for the corps and especially so for the families involved in the wedding and the dedication.
And finally, we brought to your attention during the week our Christmas Carol Concerts at the Central Theatre to be held on 1 December. We have now received a copy of the poster for this event and we thought you would like to see it, tell your friends about it and come along to check it out. Click here to book on line.
