KAOS in action

We are pleased to be able to bring you some news from KAOS (Kids Alive On Sunday). Leader Tracy Wood has sent us the following report of the morning of 15 September.

Tracy writes:

Given we are entering the Annual Appeal, and we will be asking the public for money towards the work of The Salvation Army, I felt it was the right time to talk to the young people about their personal giving and how God, through the Bible, teaches us about tithing.

Each youngster was given an imaginary £300 to spend on whatever they liked. The photos (below) show the children searching through catalogues, such as Argos and PC World, to cut out their purchases, and make a collage showing how they would spend their money.

A discussion followed about how they spent £300 and whether they NEEDED what they had bought.

We then focussed on people who have real needs, who needed not luxuries but necessities such as water, food, shelter etc. I asked the children how they could make a difference by using their money in a different way.

Using The Salvation Army Gift Catalogues the children were given the same £300 to spend and asked to think about making a difference to other people, in other countries.

Their collages looked very different!. The children bought chickens to feed a family, a whole cow, a water pump, school books and paid school fees for a child for a year, paid for meals for the elderly, bought a sewing machine – the list goes on.

Our time together was concluded by learning about tithing and how, by giving a tenth of their pocket money in our junior offering each week, that money would be tithed to the Division (which tithes to Territory) and how that money is used to make a difference.

  1. Keep up the good work Tracy. I wish there were more doing the same. If only we could teach our young people the right attitude from a young age, think of the benefit to ALL.

Just goes to show I’m watching, every so often.

    God Bless

  2. Well done Tracy – it is good to expose our children to the concept/bible teaching on giving at an early age.
