STOP THE TRAFFIK

Over the last few years there has been a growing awareness of the problem of human traffiking – which in this anniversary year of the abolition of the Slave trade sees the fact that more people are in slavery and are traffiked every year than was happening in 1807! Many attempts are being made by various governments and other organizations to halt this growing problem. In financial terms alone it is the third largest criminal activity in the world after arms and drugs. In terms of human suffering, the cost is incalculable.

Nearly 10 years ago a problem of slavery and human trafficking was identified in the Ivory Coast, a country in West Africa, which produces most of the cocoa used for chocolate in the world. The major chocolate manufacturers agreed to work towards not buying from those producers who still employed children or used harmful methods to keep their workers in slave conditions.

THIS AGREEMENT IS STILL NOT WORKING!

Children are still sold into servitude and forced to work long hours for little or no pay. Adult workers are regularly beaten. All because we want cheap chocolate!

We can make a difference. By eating Fairtrade chocolate, we can guarantee that no traffiked labour has been used in its production. Be like Wilberforce, boycott those companies who do not use or sell Fairtrade chocolate.
