Monday Spot (14 May 2007)
The main feature of this week’s Monday Spot is Saturday’s concert at St Matthew’s Church in Wigmore given by our Band and Songsters
The evening began with the Songsters singing ‘If you would be Strong’ followed by ‘Somebody prayed for Me’ and ‘Under His Wings’.
The Band featured ‘Praise Him’ and ‘Simple Gifts’ before an interval when the performers and congregation were able to mingle and enjoy fellowship.
Major Drew and Rev Chris Butt, Team Rector of St Matthew’s
Richard Craik gives a vibrant testimony
Following the interval the timbrels performed to music from ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ and the Songsters brought ‘Arms of Love’ (soloist Carolynn Woodman) and ‘Part the Waters’. The Band adopted a ‘big band’ swing style with ‘Deep River’ and ‘Swingtime Religion’. Major Drew spoke from the scriptures and brought to an end an evening which seemed to have been very much enjoyed by members of the Church and Salvationists alike.
There will be another concert at St Matthew’s on 9 June when the guests will be the Kent Chamber Choir with a programme of sacred and secular music. Phone 01732 845550 for tickets (order and pay at the door).
On Sunday morning we received the sad news that Shirley Lebar had passed away on Friday evening. Shirley was a new Christian and had only become an adherent of The Salvation Army six weeks ago. Here is a picture of her acknowledgement on 1 April:Shirley is second from the right.
Husband Dave thanked the congregation for the way in which Shirley had been received into the fellowship of the corps. We offer to Dave, and the rest of the family, our deepest sympathy.
Major Kathy was again our leader for the day’s worship which began in the morning with the continuation of our series on the ‘Fruit of the Spirit’. This week we considered ‘meekness’ and ’self-control’. Kathy chose songs 699, 416, 619 and 705 from The Salvatioin Army Song Book together with 1184 and 1113 from Songs of Fellowship. Her scriptural base was Galations 5:16-26 and John 2:13-16. In her address she said God does not intend that His followers are all coloured in shades of grey, having no signs of strength of character. Jesus was, himself, gentle but also sometimes angry. However, his anger was always controlled. If we are angry it must be at important matters, not small, insignificant, issues. St Augustine is reputed to have said ” without God we cannot - without us God will not”.
The musical contributions to the meeting were ‘Ev’ry time I feel the Spirit’ by the Singing Company and two songs from the Songsters, ‘One Life to Live’ and Somebody prayed for Me’, this last at the request of Shirley’s family.
We would like to take this opportunity of reminding readers that the Ladies Fellowship takes place this evening and that Christine Etheridge will be speaking about stringing pearls. Pearls of wisdom, perhaps?
Look after yourselves and take care. See you next week, if not before.
