Prison Officer’s Alpha

Local Salvationists Paul and Wendy Scoulding are responsible for the organisation and running of Alpha courses for colleagues in the prison service.

Paul’s sister-in-law Melanie, who with husband Steve runs the Alpha courses here at Chatham tells us:

One of the greatest joys in being involved with the Alpha Course is seeing the difference that Christ makes to individual lives. It’s only a short step from experiencing this change to wanting to spread the Good News and letting others know how their lives can change too! Just a couple of years ago Paul, (Steve’s brother) and Wendy, (his wife) decided to come along to a course to find out for themselves just what it was that had made such a difference in our lives. As they heard and learnt more, they realised that they too needed Jesus, and they both committed themselves to Him.

Paul and Wendy are both Prison Officers, and they soon realised that many of their friends and colleagues didn’t know very much about Jesus. They decided to lead an Alpha Course themselves, and together with Captain Eileen and Corps Secretary Diane from Plumstead Corps, they set up an Alpha course specifically for Prison Officers. Shift-work can make it impossible to complete a regular course, so this one is tailor-made to fit! They are now running their third such course!

Steve and I were asked to go along on the Holy Spirit Day (held at Burrswood-see below) in order to give prayer support. As this was only one week after our own Holy Spirit Day, with our group from Chatham, the first thought that crossed my mind was, “we are far too tired!” But I had forgotten about God’s amazing provision! Although we had not met Paul and Wendy’s colleagues before, they welcomed us into the group, and allowed us to share this special day with them. We were able to laugh and cry with them, and to pray for them as some made decisions to ask Jesus in. For some, more questions were raised and for others, answers were found. What a privilege to be part of the group and to be able to share that wonderful moment when a soul is reconciled to God and God pours out His blessings. Hallelujah!
