Monday Spot (31 July 2006)
Last week we showed you a full bottle of Diet Coke and spoke about our two ‘experts’ who correctly identified ‘The Real Thing’ in our morning meeting. Well, the weather in South East England this week has been so hot that many bottles of cold drinks have been consumed, including the one we showed you last week. The temperatures have reached 30c most days and that is high for the UK, almost as high as in Florida where David and Sarah are spending their honeymoon (see David’s comment under Wedding Pictures).
The schools are out, the summer holidays are well under way, the beaches are full and The Salvation Army’s summer school activities have started. Our Sunday congregations will be below average in size for the next five or six weeks at least and our band and songsters will be running on minimum numbers. Isn’t it good that God himself never takes a holiday. He’s always there for us and over the next few weeks we still hope to bring you news of our Sunday worship plus some ’snippets’ from the various summer activities around.
Back to the Ten Commandments then for our morning meeting. Major Kathy took the subject ‘You shall not misuse the name of the Lord’
We used songs in worship referring to the name of Jesus (Jesus, what a beautiful name and Blessed be the name of the Lord) and Major Kathy said that to misuse the name of Jesus is a personal insult to God.
The evening meeting, led by Major Beverley featured the well known scripture passage from 1 Corinthians chapter 13 which inspired the song known to Salvationists as ‘The Greatest of These’. Here are the words of the chorus:-
Love suffereth patiently;
Love worketh silently;
Love seeketh not her own.
Love never faileth;
Love still prevaileth;
Lord, in me thy love enthrone.
We also used the words of General John Gowans ‘You can’t stop God from loving you. Not God, not now, not ever.
Not even when you’re on holiday!
