Monday Spot (3 July 2006)

This week our Songsters were privileged to share the concert platform with The Medway Band (Kent Messenger). For those who do not live in the Kent area, The Kent Messenger is our local newspaper (and a very good one at that). The concert was given in Chatham’s Brook Theatre on Saturday evening.

The Band is conducted by Graham Wilson who has Salvation Army connections. Whilst being the brother-in-law of a currently serving Chatham SA bandsman (Chris Horton), Graham’s father (Tommy) was once a member of The Salvation Army’s International Staff Band. Tommy was also once a member of The Band of HM Scots Guards in which he served with a former Bandmaster of Chatham SA Band, Ray Jones. He now lives in Canada and plays with the London (Ontario) Salvation Army Band. Amongst the pieces included by the Medway Band were ‘Hungarian March’, ‘Gaelforce’, ‘Jupiter’ and ‘Sweet Georgia Brown’.

Chatham Songsters were conducted by Adrian Horwood and included ‘God of my Praise’, God so loved the World’ and ‘Somebody prayed for Me’ concluding the evening with ‘Vespers’. The Songsters, and the audience, were also invited by the Band to participate in a rendition of Parry’s famous hymn ‘Jerusalem’.

The evening provided an excellent prelude to our Sunday worship. The morning meeting was led by Major Beverley, beginning a series on ‘The Ten Commandments’. Incidentally, last week a piece of masonry fell from the parapet above the main entrance of our Hall. We searched the ‘tablet of stone’ diligently but found no further commandments. There are still only ten!

In the evening Major Drew continued with the theme of ‘Scripture that inspires Songs’, featuring 2 Chronicles 7 v 13-14 and the song ‘We’re looking to your promise of old’. The words of the chorus say:

Lord, send revival, start with me.
For I am one of unclean lips,
And my eyes have seen the King;
Your glory I have glimpsed.
Send revival, start with me.

Start with you?

See you next week!
